Something’s always cooking with Michael Simmons DeFord.
A chef by trade, this stalwart Broadway Cares volunteer is “king of the kitchen” when it comes to donating his time. In addition to spending so much of it here with us for the past ten years, Michael remains active with other AIDS organizations as well.
“While I was producing and appearing on some cooking shows, I spent time working with ASOs (AIDS Service Organizations) in the late 80s and early 90s. I was making meals for people with HIV and AIDS, working with organizations like Food for Life in Washington, DC, and the West Hollywood AIDS Foundation in Los Angeles,” he says. “I still help out with the Nebraska AIDS Project when I can.”
A Man Who Loves Bonnets
Yes, Michael’s all over the map, which isn’t surprising for someone who grew up in Oklahoma and lived in Europe and Hawaii before settling in Brooklyn.
So, how did he come to land at BC/EFA?
“I’m positive. I was an Actors Fund client for years. That’s how I got involved. It’s a wonderful feeling of satisfaction, a giant, extended family,” says Michael. “Easter Bonnet’s my favorite event now. During those six weeks of fundraising in the theatres, I manage the merchandise table for The Lion King full time. I’m there every day.
“It’s spring, and people are so incredibly giving. One time we got $700 anonymously. But the best was when a man who was so moved by the actor’s curtain speech came to my table and donated $2500, out of the goodness of his heart. It’s a fun, joyous time.”
